AK45 Mix: I Remember - Gospel

The long overdue sequel to the 07/07/07 Spiritual Funk/Soul/Rock/Jazz mix. "I Remember" keeps things gospel, an oft-overlooked genre that I became acquainted with through my love of soul music. Many of the early soul artists started out in gospel, and "went secular." Artists like Ray Charles didn't even bother to change the music, singing secular lyrics over gospel standards. "God" simply became "you babe."

As I wind my way through this genre, I never stop being surprised just how diverse the sound can be. Gospel aint just church organ and choir. Gospel-funk, gospel-jazz, gospel-rock, rockin-gospel-anti-rock, gospel-disco, modern-soul-gospel, there's plenty of stuff to love, and hate, within the genre. "I Remember" isn't so much about representing the diverse limits of the gospel genre (perhaps another mix?) as it is about blending together the finest examples of this vast genre that I could find. I hope you enjoy it.

For the curious, here is some background info on the music:

Well what can I say? This year was nucking futs. Easily a couple hundred people. At 3:00am, there were buses coming from downtown, completely full of people in costume heading to "that villa party." Was it out of hand? I can't decide that for everyone. Some people loved it, others thought it was way too crowded. At the peak, the dance floor was strictly "do the minnow" room only. Amazingly no cops were called. They stopped by once on a routine drive by to note, "that's way too many people on the roof." A valid point. I've got no idea what the load capacity of the villa roof is, and I'm not interested in pushing it to failure.

As usual, a couple "aspiring DJs"/drunken assholes kept fucking with the DJ gear. You can hear one of them banging away on the piano, and being ejected at exactly 45:10 in the mix. The other guy, after his second warning, said "I do it because I love you man." Fair enough. Roommates Brad and Greg helped with DJing, and DJ GoreMay. Brad and GoreMay bookend this year's mix.

Thanks to everyone who attended, for the good times, great costumes, and good spirits. As always.

I'm all about the cassette tape right now. My car has a cassette player, and instead of trying to circumvent it with tape adapters and FM transmitters, I'm embracing the technology. I bought a Nakamichi DR-2 recorder and hit up the thrift stores for blank tapes. I love the process of going from vinyl, to digital, to tape. It's a great marriage of technologies, and in the end I get to hold something.

This mix is 30 minutes per side, perfect for a 60 minute blank tape. Dub it to tape, pop it in the car, and drive mother drive!

Or, you can buy a cassette from me and it will be the best possible quality: straight from 48 KHz 24 Bit digital audio, through the Nakamichi, to tape. Every copy is a master! Plus it'll be super personalized n' shit.

But enough about the medium, onto the message: Jump Blues and Rock. The mix touches on a lot of different genres, from jump blues to 50s rock to rockabilly to garage to gospel, but if I had to peg down a common thread, I'd say it's music that MOVES. A bit about the cover picture: Careless Whisper and Kenny G likely have damaged the legitimacy of the saxophone beyond repair, but if we go back to 1948, we can see how the instrument was supposed to be played. Big Jay McNeely killing.

All tracks are from records I picked up in Cuba in 2009. While not the primary purpose for my trip, I had a few titles in mind.

Happening upon a Frank Emilio with Tata Guines record in Havana, I excitedly asked the market vendor where I could find more like this. A phone call and "local's taxi" car ride later -- it's courtesy and expected for car owners to pack their car with waiting locals, but illegal for tourists -- put me deep in Centro Habana, in a broken down home powered by a single light bulb. But he had the goods, the "crema, crema, CREMA", he'd shake his head and say whenever I pulled out a promising title.

I only had room in my pack for about a dozen, and on those I did bring back, I spent a couple hours per record scrubbing the grime away. Some of the records are a little scratchy, but like the country itself, this just adds character.

Nothing but the best in this one. I'm keeping things in the deep soul genre, with a few northern tracks thrown in to spice things up. After the holidays I'll put together a northern soul stormer, a rockabilly rager, and a groovy gamut of gospel -- just gotta fill out the collection a bit more.

I don't know what's more fun, the Halloween party, or right NOW, Nov 20, 5:12pm. I'm drunk as f*ck on high-end scotch, listening to this year's mix bounce to disk, and pulling FB photos of some damn sexy people dressed amazingly. I love the world right now. This would certainly qualify as drink-n-blog, but whatevs. This has got to be the longest running kickass halloween party of all time. Every year I'm worried that it has jumped the proverbial shark, and every year at precisely 11:48pm on day of said party, I'm like, "Who was that little bitch who was worried two hours ago? This is off the chain-hook!" Why can't every day be Halloween? Maybe in Ibiza. Can I be Frankie Wilde when I grow up? Or his nemesis, the evil Coke Badger? So anyway like I mentioned earlier I'm drunk drunk drunk and have decided to forgo punctuation at this point so it's probably best to let the music and photos speak for themselves

Once again, thanks to everyone who came out to biggest and best Halloween house party in all of Marpole -- at least that's what the creepy "neighbor" said, who I later caught stealing my beer. Sorry I didn't get a chance to catch up with everyone. The costumes were great. Half the fun is going through the pictures afterward and figuring out who you guys were dressed as. I discovered three new movies in the process.
