Does anyone have any educated opinion on whether this would be any good for getting onto rooftops?

Looking to rob a bank? Shocked

That's an aid climbing hook. It's only about 2" big, so if you've thinking it's a ninja style grappling hook...it aint. It'll certainly assist you given the right features, and if you know anything about aid climbing.

Note, it's not a very good idea to trust your life to a single point of protection, and hooks can't really be considered a point of protection at all. (Well, with added duct tape some aid climbers would beg to differ.) In any case, it's meant as a temporary point of rest, moving on to something more solid.

Anyway, blah, blah, blah. The short of it is: it's fine to pull off of, given whatever its hooked to can take the stress, but don't trust your life to it. As far as the hook itself breaking, that aint gonna happen. I've used the same hook to clean some buildering routes.

Isn't buildering climbing WITHOUT saftey or other gear?

It's whatever you want it to be. I'd say it's more commonly practiced with gear, unless doing lowball stuff. Even those skyscraper guys like Alain use gear from time to time (but never admit it).

Just to clarify ard's statement - I agree, but most of the buildering that actually takes place (unseen, unrecorded) is lowball stuff done without equipment, akin to bouldering. Eg:

Yea agreed. It's not always the big building like people may think.

Thanks!  I did a shoot with Bobby earlier this year in the hope of photographing with him again at some point.  However, my summer has been typically busy to the point that I've not really had chance.  Things should quieten down again come mid October so maybe I'll head out with him and a few others and grab some more.
