Mounties get their Spider-Man In Coquitlam

ardarvin — Mon, 06/18/2007 - 17:30

From tricitynews.com:

Police arrested a man in a Spider-Man suit Friday morning after he scaled a pedestrian overpass in Port Coquitlam, closing the Mary Hill bypass for three hours during the morning rush hour.

The regional Emergency Response Team was deployed to capture the action hero, who was making a statement on behalf of Fathers-4-Justice Canada, a group that campaigns for a fathers’ equal rights to raise their children after divorce.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Brenda Gresiuk said the local detachment and Port Coquitlam’s Fire and Emergency Services got the call about the stunt at around 5 a.m., and the bypass was subsequently closed for “public safety reasons” until he was taken into custody. The provincial highway reopened at around 9 a.m.

“It’s always dangerous when someone puts themselves in a situation like that,” Gresiuk said, adding although Spidey was wearing a safety harness, “we treat it quite seriously.”

Charges of mischief are pending.

A request for comment from Fathers-4-Justice Canada wasn’t immediately returned Friday.

An open letter to Ms. Gresiuk:

“It’s always dangerous when someone puts themselves in a situation like that,” Gresiuk said, adding although Spidey was wearing a safety harness, “we treat it quite seriously.”

Is it always dangerous Ms. Gresiuk? Because it seems to me that the Fathers4Justice are very cautious and take the time to assess risk before performing their stunts. One member is a volunteer firefighter, and another is a former RCMP officer, so one can assume that they might be somewhat skilled in risk assessment. In a previous Pattullo Bridge stunt, these guys cased out the bridge on 10 separate occasions before climbing it.

It's obvious that nobody was in any real danger and that you are either trying to get a cheap scare out of the public, or trying to justify shutting down a major highway for four hours. By the way...four hours? Did you have to ship in someone qualified to handle the situation from Seattle? Next time look me up, I live 20 minutes away.

I do wish you'd spend my tax dollars on something a little more useful, like rescuing cats out of trees.
