Anybody out there ever gone buildering in Feiyue shoes? They are my standard street shoes, and I have really enjoyed buildering in them. They've got a ton of grip, are reasonably sturdy, fit snugly, and have a nice rubber cap on the toe and reinforcment along the sides for jamming, hooks, etc. Also, since they were originally martial arts shoes, they are made with running and jumping in mind (I need not point out that "running" can also mean "running from authority figures," and "jumping" can also mean "falling"). The downsides are that even though the padding is decent, it definitely isn't as padded as cross-trainers (although still way better than climbing shoes), and unless you get the hi-top version there's no ankle support. The price is basically unbeatable: $15 for low-tops, $30 for hi-tops.

ps. I'm new to both the forum and to buildering. I go to the University of Florida, and I'm not a great climber, but I like to climb trees and buildings on campus and have also explored the steam vents here some. Right now I'm basically just working on technique and attemping to not take stupid risks. Trying to use my arms less and my legs more, not doing anything with a death fall, etc.

Anyway, it's nice to meet you all. Or at least post on this forum.

Cheers!

Welcome the the site. I've seen a couple guys rock these shoes for Parkour. See: http://www.buildering.net/gallery/pkca3_5
Seriously impressive given the lack of cushioning.

I've never seen anyone builder in them, although I can't imagine why not. Basically any street shoe works, and the tighter the fit the better.

People seem to get all caught up in "what's best", and the obvious answer is that climbing shoes are best. But they aren't the coolest, and really, buildering is all about style.

Feiyue shoes = high style points, and therefore are buildering.net approved pimp

R. With ard on this one. Have got a pair lined up, simply out of curiosity. Just need to find something else to pad out my amazon order. Hmm.

For once this spammer is vaguely useful in that he/she/it has reminded me of this thread.

I bought my pair of Feiyue as mentioned above and absolutely love them. No support, no cushioning, and my feet feel a million times stronger as a result. Occasionally someone I don't know will spot them and say "Feiyue. Nice!" or something similar which is quite pleasing in a totally gay way. The soles are fucked which is fair enough given that they were £12 and I've been wearing them pretty much every day for the last year. almost ordered some more yesterday but there seems little point until the current pair give way completely.

If you haven't bought some, buy some. They're so cheap that you might as well do it. Seriously. It'll be like an early christmas present to yourself.

Thanks Kiell. I really should try to strengthen my feet. I've got old man plantar fasciitis, so I have orthotics in any shoe I wear. But it's kinda like relying on a knee brace or something for strength -- i.e. my feet are weak as fuck. I can't walk for 5 mins on a hardwood floor without them hurting. There's got to be a way for me to ease into the strengthening process. Actually, the foot doc told me to put a towel on the floor with a weight at one end and do toe curls -- curling up the towel. I should probably listen to him.

I'm gonna look for some Feiyue shoes next time I'm in Chinatown.

dude, just order them off amazon. way easier. if they're the wrong size, shit dude, it's $15 for a pair. you have a job so you'll be fine.

been reading a fair bit recently about trainers in general. dunno if you've been following some of the links i've been posting on twitter and the like, but some fella at harvard has proved that the more you spend on running shoes, the more likely you are to develop injuries (achilles inflammation, sheath separation, shin splints, etc). And then Christopher McDougall dropped a bomb the other week, quoting some senior tech guy at Nike who's admitted that they've been designing their shoes wrong for the last twenty years.

interesting stuff.

Sorry to resurrect such an old topic but over here in the New Zealand parkour scene we love Feiyues, and talk about them a fair bit. I think I've gone through six pairs in the past two years! Nice to hear that builderers like them too; I was just wondering which shoe to try buildering in Laughing out loud

For the love of god, Wilf, please resurrect as many old threads as you possibly can.  ;)  Welcome. Smiling

I'm on to my second pair.  I've not used them for buildering as yet and I'm not sure how well they will stand up to it  - ideally in climbing you need either sticky rubber or failing that, a nice rigid edge (or both).  The Feiyue don't offer a firm edge so whilst they'd be fun to clamber about it, I'm not sure they're ideal.  Also, you'd want them to fit as tightly as possible to ensure the foot doesn't move about inside.  But, each to their own - I'm sure someone out there will love them for buildering. In the spirit of reviving old threads, I'll add my endorsement to feiyues. I've gone through nine pairs of them for parkour, and I've climbed in them a fair bit as well. I honestly haven't come across anything better as of yet. That may change very soon however; one of my parkour buds was rocking these yesterday and I like them quite a bit. From the look and feel, they'd be more durable than the feiyues (in the sole, at least), and the lack of ridges is probably a plus when it comes to breaking them in.
EDIT: lol, forgot to add the link :/
