So I took my driving test this morning. I was coming up to a mini roundabout with three exits, two left and one right exits, I'm aiming for the second so start signalling. A delivery van pull up the the first exit and pulls out in front of me while I'm on the roundabout! We both had to stop -> instant FAIL! £56 down the drain because of some idiot not waiting to see where I was going. Other than that only two minor faults, so I was pretty much spot on!

How many tries did it take you? Any bad experiences?

I passed everyone of my driving tests on my first try (here in New Mexico we have 4). But on one of them, my instructor asked if I knew a certain route, and when I told him I did, he proceded to sleep for the entirety of my driving test. I didn't make any major mistakes anyways though.

Weird Phil. People aren't supposed to enter roundabouts if someone else is in them...at least that's how it is in Canada. Seems the other driver was at fault and you couldn't do much about it. What did the instructor say was the appropriate action to be done by you?

I passed my drivers test, and my motorbike test both first try. Both times I got demerits for driving too slow. Seems the safe way to do it, it's a lot better than failing for going 1 kph over the limit.

I think it was just because he was in a hurry he thought I was taking the first left rather than second. Yeah, OK so It was my fault I should have indicated later - but my road position and speed clearly showed where I was intending to go (hooray for blaming other people!). Ahh well, you live and learn eh? Am re-booked for 2 weeks time - I'll have nearly been driving a whole year on L plates... If I wasn't so lazy I'd have booked it ages ago.

4 tests?! What're they all for?

Well, here at least, you don't just get your license after taking a test, you have to hold it for 6 months without getting pulled over, and take 4 tests that are all the same throughout where the instructor just sees if you have improved at all. Then you have another license for a year with which you can only drive one other person outside your family, and only before midnight. Then after that you get an actual license.

i don't think people know how to navigate roundabouts in canada. i've been cut off every single time i've been in one. and i yell. oh do i yell at them, i tell them "I LIVED IN AUSTRALIA, I KNOW ROUNDABOUTS" but they ignore me, and wave politely as if i had graciously yielded them right of way.

That seems like a much better way to do it. I know some awful drivers who have passed over here.

Roundabouts > Cross roads

So I passed this time around. Didn't do quite as well, but I passed so I don't care. You know the nicest thing about passing? Being able to slip the wheel and cross your hands. So much easier. It seems really weird not having someone sat beside me...
